COP 2 - Study Task 03 - Parody and Pastiche

Intertextuality means that one text is shown and understood by understanding other texts. Parody and pastiche are both examples of this. Jameson shows how he feels towards pastiche by describing it as a 'neutral piece of mimicry, without any parody's ulterior motives, devoid of laughter'. In contrast, Hutcheon looks at pastiche in a more positive way, specfically in architecure. She comments how 'parody signals how present representations come from past ones and what ideological consequences derive from both continuity and difference'.

Hutcheon's understanding of parody is dissimilar to Jameson's idea of pastiche. Hutcheon believes that it shows historical awareness and embraces culture, whereas Jameson sees pastiche as 'blank parody'.
